It solved my problem - the Windows Update service was using svchost and driving CPU and memory usage to the sky. I always shut down overnight and turn on the next day when I need to. You should not be afraid to disable the BITS service as it will not, in any way, affect the way your computer runs on an everyday basis. It's a rather odd program, and haven't figured out the cause yet.
