Set the computer to never sleep when plugged in. I find I am unable to post my answer there as the answer controls are missing, perhaps related to marking it as a duplicate, so this seems the next best place Dont know why the official micosoft answers that appear at the top of the search list cannot provide such simple fixes. Karl For what it's worth, we had to manually stop the Windows Update Service between each and every manual update, and then start the Background Intelligent Transfer and Windows Update Services Windows Update Standalone Installer Stuck In order to kill it I had to close three tasks in Task Manager or restart. For me the update has only been stuck for a month for no apparent reason (last updates installed late september '16 and it is now october). Number 2 worked for me.
As well as any other program that runs self update, they should all be turned off to prevent them from trying to self update during your installing of these files.What did Step 1, c showed my Windows Update service as being disabled.
