If I accidentally click the link, rather than ctrl+clicking, then I have to wait for the entire page to be rendered again, and lose my place in the comments. But my feeling is very much as Paul says that target="_blank" is a bit of a shiboleth that "really doesn’t present much of an issue for a majority of visitors". I've probably gone on too long, congratulations if you made it this far. The one fix breaks on the & in the url - the second fix should work with it.

Opening a new tab on behalf of the user for external links means they won't get lost. While I do understand that forcing a user's browser to behave a certain way might be considered slightly annoying, I wouldn't consider it invasive or wrong. Find the theme you want to edit, click the ... So why throw in JS (let alone jQuery) for such basic stuff as opening a link in a new window is? Why? Coming "back" to an infinite scroll page should take you to where you left off in most cases.
