This Microsoft Support article suggests some more solutions: When you start Internet Explorer, it opens, flashes, and then closes immediately Reset Internet Explorer settings : Control Panel / Internet Options / Much Appreciated! The scripts seem to have sorted everything out. I can't even blog on an iPad, much more on an iPhone.

After a nasty virus infection I had everything working again EXCEPT IE 8 on XP. Installing the latest Cumulative Patch for IE may solve the problem as a side-effect.
